Viet intelligence in research capital of Samsung

Viet intelligence in research capital of Samsung

With two complexes in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen, Vietnam is currently the production base of more than 50% of Samsung’s mobile phones, but not many people know this massive responsibility lies on the shoulders of Vietnamese engineers.

From studying technology…

As one of the first people to pave the way for the development of SVMC, Nguyen Dang Trung (born in 1986) – Project Manager at the center, said that back in 2012 engineers like him simply adjusted available software in terms of language and different requests for the market in Southeast Asia.

In 2014, Trung and his colleagues were assigned to support the development of the Galaxy V series software, which was one of the first projects Vietnamese workers took charge of.

"At that time, I was very happy and proud because we finally had a chance to develop a big project by ourselves. India also asked to copy our software to apply to the Galaxy V series", Trung said.

Guiding us on a tour around the workplace, the leader of Samsung Vietnam Mobile R&D Center told us about the significant investment in Vietnamese engineers, from transferring to mastering the most advanced technologies of the group.

So far, SVMC has built a team of more than 2,200 engineers specializing in mobile software research and development. This is also Samsung's largest research and development center in Southeast Asia.

SVMC is researching major areas of developing software for mobile devices. Researching and developing technical solutions on mobile platforms including embedded systems, communication protocols, multimedia services, S Pen solutions and phone security.

In addition, SVMC is also involved in the transfer of advanced technologies into production at the two largest Samsung manufactories in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen, contributing to numerous accomplishments of Samsung Electronics- the most successful foreign investment enterprise in Vietnam with an export turnover of USD 60 billion in 2018, equivalent to 25% of Vietnam's total export turnover.

According to SVMC leader, the center has implemented hundreds of, including S Note applications, social network PEN.UP for the "magic" S Pen - the device attached to the Galaxy Note series, and Smart Switch - an extremely useful tool used to transfer data between phones or from phone to computer.

...to mastering the R&D base of Samsung

Engineer Nguyen Dang Trung said in recent years, many Vietnamese engineers have gone to study and work at Samsung R&D centers in other countries. With the initial purpose of learning, now Vietnamese engineers have caught up, even going abroad to support other R&D centers with their technical experience in several areas.

SVMC does not only transfer but is also the leader of applications such as FM Radio or Voice Recorder and Calculator.

Thanks to these successes, Vietnamese engineers at SVMC continue to be assigned to develop software for commercialized phone lines globally, with increasing complexity. The work is on par with other R&D centers where there are senior engineers from South Korea, India or New Zealand ...

Mr. Trung also revealed that many applications for Samsung product lines, including the most advanced technology and sophisticated products, have been developed or contributed by SVMC engineers.

With the advancement of Vietnamese engineers, SVMC has been involved in many global projects. One of them is the S Pen application software for the Galaxy Note series. Vietnamese engineers even invented the software for the first smartphone 3-camera on the Samsung Galaxy A7. Currently, SVMC is developing two new projects, Galaxy A30s and Galaxy A50s, for the second half of 2019.

Thus, from researching and developing phone software in solely Southeast Asia, SVMC has expanded its deployment scope to localization projects in Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. In addition, SVMC has also implemented original projects to develop the entire software systems and features for Samsung's mid-end and high-end phone segments.

According to Mr Choi Joo Ho, the 'captain' of Samsung Vietnam, Samsung plans to build a R&D center in the new urban area of West Ho Tay. According to the plan, SVMC's workforce is expected to increase from the current 2,200 employees to 3,000 with a core of Vietnamese engineers to develop the latest technologies such as 5G, AI and Big Data, etc.

A promising new chapter begins once again for Samsung Vietnam and SVMC. We are waiting for Vietnamese intelligence to shine brightly, becoming an indispensable pillar of the engineering team at the global technology giant. /.
