APEC 2017 theme continuation of previous agenda: Expert

Boosting trade and investment cooperation within APEC to "protest" against rising protectionism has significant meaning in the current global situation, Professor Liu Ying, Research Fellow of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China, said.

She stressed that with globalisation at “a crossroad,” APEC’s unabated efforts to increase trade and investment liberalisation will help improve the investment and business environment and the economic situation of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.

APEC 2017’s theme “Creating new dynamism, Foster a shared future” is considered a continuation of the previous APEC agenda, including APEC 2014 Beijing and APEC 2016 Peru where planning for increased global chain value, innovation and connectivity were urged, she told Vietnam News Agency.

Prof. Liu added that APEC’s ability to stabilise the situation, assume the leading role in opening up cooperation directions for parties involved, promote trust in cooperation and facilitate the cooperation roadmap, especially the implementation of economic integration – including FTAPP (Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific) – will hold significant value in the context of rising anti-globalisation sentiment, protectionism and other extreme phenomena. APEC Beijing 2014 highlighted innovative growth as the main driver to promote the global value chain, the professor noted.

She believed APEC Việt Nam 2017 would continue to help consolidate such efforts. She also said that in the field of economic development, the dynamics of Viet Nam are very prominent.

Regarding new momentum, Prof. Liu said China, Việt Nam and other member economies of APEC are looking for new economic growth models and seizing opportunities for a new technology revolution to promote global value chain linkages. From a low level of development, the target is to shift to medium and high, evidenced by China’s efforts to promote structural reform of the supply chain or Viet Nam’s commitment to restructuring its economic sectors.

Liu also rated highly the State-level visit of China Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping to Việt Nam following APEC’s summit week, which she said would serve as an important boost to the growing ties between the two countries.

With Việt Nam in the "fast growth" period and the country’s closeness with China in both geography and politics increasing, potential for closer links between the two countries remains visibly prominent, she noted.
